The Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, West Virginia
The Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge is a scenic natural environment where visitors can explore thousands of acres of diverse habitats. Trails designated for a variety of recreational activities traverse the Refuge, giving visitors plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife, fish, hunt or just relax in a beautiful natural environment. There are many miles of trails available for walking, biking, and horseback riding at the Canaan Valley Refuge. Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are also available for enjoying the Refuge in the fall and winter months. There are also trails that permit vehicle use.Throughout the Refuge, you may see and photograph wildlife such as deer, beaver and raccoons. You can also fish in streams at the Refuge, and hunting is allowed by permit. The Canaan Valley Refuge is a popular birding destination, too. The wetlands, fields and forested areas are home to a huge diversity of permanent resident bird species, and many more migrate through the area seasonally. Visitors can participate in educational nature and environmental programs and guided tours held at the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge seasonally.
