Prostate cancer treatment
Prostate cancer is a cancer that is specific to men and the oldest known prostrate treatment for this is prostrate surgery. There are many factors to consider before the best prostrate treatment plan can be decided upon in the fight against cancer. The first consideration is the age and overall health of the individual along with the size and location of the tumor.
There are two options available with radiation therapy these are the use of an external beam or radioactive seed implants. Other prostate cancer treatment options include surgery, hormone therapy, and chemotherapy and pain medications. Radiation beams are targeted with the use of a computerized program that directs the beam to a specific location targeting cancer cells.
Many men who have prostate cancer choose Bracey therapy (implanting very small radioactive pellets precisely inside the prostrate) over other prostrate cancer treatment plans because it is a one time out-patient treatment plan. Other prostrate treatment programs often produce a large number of unwanted side effects, which have an effect on the quality of life for the individual.
When prostrate surgery known as a prostatectomy is preformed, it is accomplished by making a small surgical cut in the abdomen for laparoscopic use. Prostate cancer is not age discriminate and appears in men of all ages. It also has the same progression rate in younger men as it has in older men. When prostrate surgery is needed it is to remove a section of, or the whole prostate gland, but this is usually prior to not after brachy therapy. In cases where the patient has a significant increase in fecal or urinary incontinence, surgery may be necessary.
Another option for prostate cancer treatment is chemotherapy where anti cancer drugs are used for fighting cancer cells in the body. Chemotherapy is often successful for prostrate treatment because it stops the actual advancement of the cancer cells from doubling and spreading throughout the body. Side effects from chemotherapy include nausea, vomiting and anemia. Infection is also a known side effect with the use of chemotherapy.
